Big Image Crafts a Bespoke Stage Curtain for Sámi National Theatre
A new stage curtain now adorns the Sámi National Theatre Beaivváš. Created by artist Máret Ánne Sara and produced by Big Image, the curtain merges Sámi tradition with contemporary artistry, featuring a design inspired by the intricate patterns of reindeer fat membranes.
In Sámi culture, art, tradition, and craftsmanship are deeply intertwined, and pride in the Sami heritage is a fundamental part of their identity. With the piece Gapmu — the Sámi word for gut feeling — the vision was to depict Sámi traditional knowledge and spirituality in a modern context. Beyond its artistic expression, the curtain also needed to meet technical requirements such as light-blocking and adaptability. Big Image developed multiple sketches and prototypes before selecting a lift curtain mechanism and cotton fabric, chosen for its natural drape and ability to be printed in a single, seamless piece.
A Design Inspired by Reindeer Membrane
The artwork was created by Máret Ánne Sara, an established artist known for her politically engaged and distinctive style. Growing up in a reindeer herding family in Kautokeino, she took inspiration from the delicate structure of reindeer membrane, digitally refining the pattern to fit the scale and function of the stage curtain.
A Curtain as a Work of Art
The curtain is part of the new Čoarvemátta building in Kautokeino, Norway, which houses both the Sámi National Theatre Beaivváš and the Sámi High School and Reindeer Husbandry School. The project was curated by Monica Milch Gebhardt from KORO (Public Art Norway), where the curtain became one of the most significant artistic elements in the space.
