The Largest 3D Printer in the Nordics Installed at Big Image Studio
Big Image operates the largest 3D printer of its kind in the Nordics, making it possible to bring objects up to 2x1 meters to life—or even larger when printed in multiple parts. For Swedish artist Newkid’s Poseidon tour, the printer was used to create the fingers of a giant hand that appears to rise from the sea.
“At Big Image, innovation is at the heart of everything we do. But it’s not just about technology – it’s about bringing ideas to life. Our 3D printer helps us turn visions into reality.”Andreas Skantze, Creative Directorat Big Image.
Flexible Production with Less Waste
With this 3D printer, it’s possible to create striking objects up to 1 meter in diameter and 2.2 meters in height – even larger when divided into multiple sections. It’s faster and more cost-effective than traditional methods, while allowing full flexibility in size and shape. This opens up entirely new opportunities for stages, events, and exhibitions to deliver impactful visual experiences.
It’s also possible to 3D print casting molds, which can then be filled with materials such as silicone, plaster, or concrete. This allows the same mold to be used multiple times.
Realizing Stage Design for Newkid
When Swedish artist Newkid and set designer Marcus Englesson learned about Big Image’s new 3D printer, the idea was born to create a giant hand rising from the stage floor. The Poseidon tour embraced water as its central theme, and Big Image also premium-printed a stage floor and a backdrop depicting a stormy sea. The tallest finger reaches an impressive 185 cm above the ground.
Sustainability at the Core
The technology used is FDM (Fused Deposition Modelling), which works with filament materials. Big Image primarily uses sustainable options like PLA and PETG. PETG is made from recycled plastic, while PLA is a biodegradable thermoplastic derived from renewable sources such as starch, corn, or sugarcane – often by-products from the food industry.
